3 (the 1st Fri. of month) - An informal LUNCH GATHERING FOR MEMBERS & FRIENDS/FAMILY OF COSTA RICA LIVING MESSAGE BOARD (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CostaRicaLiving) with ARCR's (http://www.ARCR.net) Ryan Piercy. They're usually at Las Mazitas Mexican Restaurant (located diagonally across from Banco Costa Rica on Calle 40, just North of Paseo Colon. 9 - SAN ISIDRO DE EL GENERAL: Celebration of the city's founding.


9-16 - INTERNATIONAL BOWLING TOURNAMENT – LA RAZA.


Week of 12 (especially the weekend) - DIA DE LA RAZA (Day of the Indigenous People)


12 (though there are festivities leading up to that day the week before - especially on the weekend) - LIMON CARNIVAL: Week-long festivities of street dances, parades, concerts draw over 100,000 folk!!! It's "Mardi Gras"/Rio’s Carnival with a Caribbean beat. Quite CRAZY/WILD!! ’07 was canceled because of the problems with Dengue.


12 - DAY OF THE CULTURES / DIA DE LAS CULTURAS. Many businesses will be closed, including the U.S. Embassy CLOSED.


12 - FIESTAS PATRONALES DEL PILAR'S DAY / VIRGEN DEL PILAR'S DAY - TRES RIOS - Celebrating their Patron Saint.


12 - FIESTA DEL MAIZ / CORN FESTIVAL - UPALA - Corn is hailed with a Parade and costumes made entirely of corn husks, grains, silks.


12 - COLUMBUS DAY - Discovery of America Descubrimiento de America, Dia de Colon


13 - COLUMBUS DAY OBSERVED - U.S. Embassy Celebrate - CLOSED


13 (2nd Mon. in Oct.) - CANADIAN THANKSGIVING


14-16 - PALMITO FAIR – HORQUETAS, SARAPIQUI - Sales of dishes made of Palmito (Hearts of Palm)


2nd Week of October - NATIONAL BAROQUE FESTIVAL - SANTA ANA Church.


24 (Fri.) - FESTIVAL - ESCAZU


28-30 & Nov. 4-6 - EXPO/FERIA DEL PEJIBAYA - TUCURRIQUE- Sales of products made of Pejibaye fruit and tree. LOCATION: Tucurrique, Cartago.


30-31 - ARCR LIVING IN COSTA RICA SEMINAR for people considering moving to Costa Rica (233-8068 / 221-2053 / seminar@CasaCanada.net / http://www.ARCR.net) (to me this is a MUST!!! COST: Non-Members: $50 (if you join, $25 will be deducted from the membership fee). Members: $25 (includes lunch/coffee breaks)


Dates change - NATIONAL ARTISAN FAIR: Organized by the Culture Ministry and the San Jose Municipality, the fair displays some of the country's finest craftsmanship. Smaller fairs are infrequently organized in other parts of the country.


31 - HALLOWEEN (though not many kids participate).
WHERE TO FIND COSTUMES - DISFRACES ABACO - Escazu-Bello Horizonte - close to Plaza Rolex (288-1557) - They have costumes for Santas, Renos, animals, flowers, and anything you need and if they don't have it, they will make it for you. They have costumes for rent and for sale. Ella-el - Escazu-San Rafael (288-2644) - Heading up the hill towards Centro Escazu/San Antonio - On your LEFT - just AFTER the Scotia Split. Mall San Pedro and Jaco. This is a seasonal Halloween Store. Gallito - Escazu (San Rafael) - Plaza Laureles - JUST East of the USA Embassador’s home - They have a large selection for little and big people.

WHERE TO CELEBRATE: Rock and Roll Pollo, White House, The Pub


Later half of October - MANOS CREADORAS NATIONAL HANDICRAFTS FAIR.


FESTIVAL OF SAN RAFAEL - Honoring cities with “San Rafael” in them – Poas, Heredia, Oreamuno and Escazu.


INTERNATIONAL GUITAR FESTIVAL - Best classic guitar players perform. Dates vary.


ANNUAL REGATTA - PUNTARENAS - Costa Rica Yacht Club’s annual Regatta
