2 - FIESTA OF THE VIRGIN OF LOS ANGELES / NUESTRA SENORA DE LOS ANGELES (Our lady of the Angels): Honors Costa Rica's Patron Saint (since 1824). La Negrita, with nationwide pilgrimage where thousands of people from Nicaragua, Costa Rica and other places walk for hours or days (San Jose to Cartago is about a 15 mile/24km walk!!) on pilgrimages to the Basilica of Cartago where the little black image of the Virgin Mary with Christ child resides. A little girl from Cartago, in 1635 had been gathering firewood, when she found this stone object, and turned it over to her priest. It gained immense interest and publicity and was eventually given its permanent home in Cartago. People come from all over Central America because it is said that miracles will happen, even from the water in the local stream there that is collected in various containers (description from http://www.jacosun.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=144&Itemid=39)
